Conference - Towards a "Post Carbon Society", Brussels, 24 October 2007

PostCarbonSociety.jpg

The dual challenge posed by climate change and the transition to a post-carbon society calls for the increasing involvement of Social Sciences and Humanities. Whether its measuring the economic impact of global warming; assessing the circumstances surrounding social adaptation to new energy and environmental models; studying long-term behavioural change; defining new forms of governance in business or the city; positioning new geopolitical relationships; or analysing potential conflicts over natural resources; Social Sciences and Humanities perspectives are becoming increasingly necessary.

Against this backdrop, DG Research (Science, Economy and Society Directorate) is organising a large conference entitled "Towards a post carbon society" in Brussels on 24 October 2007. The conference will resonate with a study we suggested launching in the European seventh RTD Framework Programme "on socio-economic factors and actors that shape the 'post carbon' society". The focus of the conference is on the demand and social sides of the energy and climate change debate. This approach enriches from the Social Sciences and Humanities perspective the scientific and technology initiatives aiming to achieve the EU greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency and renewables targets adopted by the Spring 2007 European Council.
